Fat burning is a very topical concept that is often thrown around in the weight loss industry with out a lot of substance behind many of the claims.
Lets have a look at some of the myths;
Fat Burning Suplememnts.
Can you really burn fat by taking a tablet? Well the answer is actually yes. But there are 2 major problems, the ones that had some scientific evidence supporting them, Ephedra and Ephedrine, are no longer available (banned), and the ones that are available have little or no evidence of their effectiveness.
Another way of looking at it is to ask yourself; is consuming a tablet that is aimed at artificially increasing your metabolism to the extent where it actually causes you to loose weight, REALLY a healthy thing to do? What types of chemicals or drugs are required to generate a real benefit?
Fast Weight Loss Programs;
Here is a different spin on these programs. Lets say we have a program advising you how you can loose 7 pounds in 7 days. See if you can do the opposite and put on 7 pounds in 7 days. What extremes do you think you will need to go through to achieve that.
Fast weight loss programs use shock techniques to cause you to loose a large amount of weight in a short period of time. The end result is that you return to your normal eating patterns and quickly regain all and in most cases more weight than you lost.
The weight you loose will be in the form of fluid and muscle. The amount of fat lost in a short term approach is negligible.
Of the three forms of energy your body uses, Fat is the slowest to be burnt. Your body will use carbohydrates and proteins as a source of energy before burning fat.
Low Calorie Diets;
Yes it is true you need to consume less calories than you are expending. However taking this to an extreme will cause your body to go into a a state called “the starvation response”.
In brief your body will slow down its metabolism in an attempt to burn less energy. It will start to release a variety of hormones and enzimes that will cause your body to retain fat.
Your fat resources are what you body uses when there is no carbohydrate or protein available. If you do not supply your body with sufficient food for an extended period of time, your body attempts to retain as much of that fat to stay functional.
As the starvation goes on your body will start to cannibalize your muscles and eventually organs, as a source of energy. Your muscles and organs are made up of protein so they become a source of food or energy for the body.
The Facts;
Weight Loss = consuming less calories than your body expends - FACT
Healthy weight loss is all about applying that formula with other scientific facts like the “starvation response”, and a good dose of common sense.
Our society is becoming more and more attuned to everything being “instant”. There are many things that just don’t work in our instant world, and one of those is fat burning and weight loss.
The simple formula to effective and long term weight loss is;
A healthy and balance diet - aimed at being around 10% less in calories than the average daily requirement.
+
A realistic exercise program - aimed at building extra muscle.
+ commitment + Desire + hard work.
I am sorry that I can not give you an instant solution to reducing fat. The facts remain that the most effective way to burn fat for a long term benefit is literally to burn it or use it up through a sensible diet combined with an exercise program that is aimed at increasing your metabolism.
Good Luck and have a great day,
Steve
